Report: Dodgers expressed interest in trading for Greinke

Zack Greinke spurned Chavez Ravine for the desert this winter, but that apparently hasn't discouraged the Los Angeles Dodgers from being open to a possible reunion.

The Dodgers reportedly expressed interest in trading for the right-hander leading up to Wednesday's deadline for players to be eligible for postseason rosters. Discussions, however, did not advance to anywhere substantive, sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Greinke, who reportedly cleared waivers and was eligible to be traded, agreed to a six-year, $206.5-million deal with Arizona in December. The major splash for the Diamondbacks didn't pay off though, as the team sits 19 games under .500 and is struggling with attendance.

After finishing second in National League Cy Young voting in 2015, Greinke has not been the same pitcher with the Diamondbacks. In 22 starts, he owns a 4.17 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.

It was reported earlier this week that Arizona's ownership is considering making sweeping changes to the front office, which could result in the firing of general manger Dave Stewart, chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, and assistant GM De Jon Watson. Moving Greinke's massive contract would potentially provide a new front office with more flexibility.

If the Dodgers were to bring back Greinke, they would have a core of Clayton Kershaw, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Kenta Maeda, and Julio Urias all under contract through the 2018 season.
