Report: Nationals to add Latos when rosters expand

With Stephen Strasburg sidelined and the rotation struggling, the Washington Nationals could turn to a seasoned veteran for help.

The Nationals will add right-hander Mat Latos to the big-league club when rosters expand on Sept 1, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The 28-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on June 29 and could have opted out Monday, but has agreed to stay, knowing he'll be added to the big-league roster.

Latos has performed well across three starts for the Nationals Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, compiling a 1-0 record with a 1.06 ERA, although he has walked seven hitters in 17 innings of work.

It's not an absolute certainty that Latos will immediately join the Nationals rotation, but with the strong need for starting pitching in Washington, the move would make sense.

Latos got off to a great start with the Chicago White Sox this season, winning five of his first six decisions, before things got rocky in May and June - he allowed a combined 25 earned runs over 30 innings. Latos was eventually released by Chicago in mid-June.

Over the course of eight big-league seasons, Latos owns a 70-57 record with a 3.57 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
