Astros' Luis Valbuena: Will undergo season-ending surgery

Manager A.J. Hinch announced Tuesday that Valbuena (hamstring) will undergo season-ending surgery, Julia Morales of ROOT Sports reports.

Analysis:

2016 was arguably the best season of Valbuena's career, as he posted an .816 OPS over 90 games, but his campaign will come to an end with over a month remaining in the regular season. While he will head into the offseason recovering from surgery, his strong showing with the bat should help his cause as he enters free agency for the first time. A return to Houston seems like a long shot with Alex Bregman and Yulieski Gurriel both on hand to play third base in 2017.
