Joe Nathan is going back to where it all started after agreeing to a minor-league contract Tuesday with the San Francisco Giants, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The deal is pending a physical.

Nathan was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 5 after appearing in three games, allowing two hits in two innings without giving up a run.

The former closer joins a Giants squad that's blown the third most saves in all of baseball.

PITCHER SAVES CHANCES

Nathan has undergone Tommy John surgery twice in his career, most recently in April 2015.

The 41-year-old right-hander was drafted by the Giants in 1995 and spent the first four seasons of his career in the Bay Area.

Over 16 big-league seasons, Nathan has earned 377 saves while posting a 2.88 ERA.
