The scuffling New York Mets will be without shortstop Jose Reyes until mid-August, at the earliest, as the 33-year-old has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 intercostal strain, the team announced Saturday.

"It is disappointing, because I want to be on the field," Reyes told ESPN's Adam Rubin.

Reyes, who was released by the Colorado Rockies and signed with the Mets in late June following a 52-game suspension for a domestic incident, hasn't played since Tuesday, when he strained his left intercostal muscle during the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Before landing on the disabled list, the four-time All-Star hit .239/.278/.493 (102 OPS+) with three home runs, four doubles, two triples, and three stolen bases in 16 games with New York. The Mets have lost three straight, and enter Saturday's game against the Rockies 2 1/2 games back of the second NL wild-card spot.

"Injuries are really hard, they're grueling, they're frustrating on a team but the one thing I have learned through the years was in a case like that, like Jose's and even like (Yoenis Cespedes), if you've got to give him one more day, give him one more day because it always seems like it protects you a little bit more," Collins told Julie Kayzerman of NJ.com on Thursday.
