Cardinals send struggling Rosenthal to DL

Trevor Rosenthal, the scuffling St. Louis Cardinals reliever, landed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation Tuesday, about four weeks after the 26-year-old was booted from the ninth-inning role.

To take his place on the active roster, the Cardinals recalled left-hander Dean Kiekhefer from Triple-A Memphis.

Rosenthal, who logged more saves (93) than any other pitcher over the previous two seasons, has endured the worst season of his five-year career in 2016, managing a 5.13 ERA and 2.04 WHIP with a 16.2 percent walk rate in 40 appearances before landing on the DL.

Since being removed from the closer's role in late June, however, Rosenthal had improved a bit, posting a 3.86 ERA with a 25 percent strikeout rate while allowing zero home runs in his last 11 outings.
