Cleveland Indians third baseman Juan Uribe was removed from Friday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Odrisamer Despaigne in the top of the seventh inning.

Amazingly, Uribe was able to stay on his feet after taking Despaigne's 95-mph offering off his left earflap, but keeled over as he was tended by medical personnel before being lifted for pinch-runner Rajai Davis. Diagnosed with a head contusion shortly thereafter, Uribe is considered day to day.

"It sounded bad," Indians manager Terry Francona told Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com. "He actually wanted to stay in the game. For a second I wasn't quite sure that he knew exactly where he was. I hate to ever err on the wrong side of something like that.

Heading into Friday's clash at Camden Yards, the 37-year-old had hit just .213/.265/.347 (57 OPS+) with seven home runs and nine doubles in 68 games this season.
