Colon relishes All-Star experience with fans
Bartolo Colon is loving life, and he thinks that's why people love him.
As the portly pitcher climbs on the mound, just as he has every year since 1997, the New York Mets hurler has inspired by throwing strikes, carrying his bat down the first-base line and, hitting home runs.
He doesn't do anything particularly special, but even though he can't see why, his fame stems from his ability to be himself on and off the diamond.
"I think (fans) realize I am just out there having fun and enjoying myself and they like to laugh at me when I'm up at-bat and something falls off," he told reporters Monday. "I'm always goofing off and they like that. I enjoy life in every way because you never know when is your last day."
For only the fourth time in his 19-year career, Colon is an All-Star, at 43 years old, no less. What's more is he returns to the scene of the crime, where he hit the home run at Petco Park on May 7.
As he took his time, 30 seconds, to round the bases, he convinced us that anything is possible and that even a throwback like him can achieve a childhood dream at the end of his career.
