Bruce Bochy looks like a genius.

The manager decided to utilize the hitting prowess of pitcher Madison Bumgarner instead of the typical designated hitter during a game played by American League rules Thursday, and his stud left-hander came through.

In his first at-bat of the night, Bumgarner laced a double to center field to lead off the third inning against the Oakland Athletics.

The strapping workhorse would come around to score as the Giants unleashed a six-run inning upon Athletics rookie left-hander Dillon Overton.

With the Giants batting around against the youngster, Bumgarner got a second chance to hit in the inning and popped out to second base. He finished the night 1-for-4 at the dish with a run scored as the Giants doubled up the Athletics 12-6.
