Goins lands on DL after making pitching debut

Ryan Goins' first career appearance on the mound proved costly.

On Saturday, less than 24 hours after making his professional pitching debut - a scoreless inning of relief during the Blue Jays' 19-inning loss - Goins was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right forearm tightness.

Goins, one of two Blue Jays position players to pitch during Friday's marathon tilt with the Indians, was surprisingly effective in his one inning of work, navigating his way out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam with an inning-ending double play in the 18th inning to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The slick-fielding infielder topped 90 mph with his fastball while mixing in a curveball and changeup during his 15-pitch outing. He faced five batters, allowing a pair of hits and a walk, before handing the ball over to fellow infielder Darwin Barney for the 19th inning.

Shortly after completing his pitching debut - and apparently before experiencing the tightness that forced him to the DL - Goins couldn't help but gloat about his newly revealed talent.

"I'll probably look back 10 years from now and see I'm tied for the best ERA in Major League Baseball," he jokingly told MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm. "I got that going for me."

In a corresponding move before Saturday's matinee with the Indians, the Blue Jays, who used seven relievers during Friday's 2-1 loss, recalled lefty Aaron Loup from Triple-A Buffalo.
