Adam Wainwright came within inches of pulling a Randy Johnson on Monday night in Kansas City, as the St. Louis Cardinals' veteran right-hander just barely missed hitting a bird with a second-inning curveball that Cheslor Cuthbert ended up fouling off.
Johnson, of course, was responsible for the most unforgettable case of aviancide in baseball history, as the decorated left-hander famously exploded a dove with a fastball during a spring training game back in 2001.
"I'm sitting there waiting for (the pitch), and I'm expecting to catch the thing, and all you see is an explosion," said Rod Barajas, who was behind the plate when Johnson unloaded that fateful pitch. "It's crazy. There's still feathers down there."
