Myers drives in 5, Padres spoil Reds' big day with 13-4 win
CINCINNATI (AP) The Reds honored their greatest team, then watched the Padres crank out runs like a machine.
Wil Myers drove in five runs and Melvin Upton Jr. had a pair of two-run homers on Friday night as San Diego scored in each of the first eight innings of a 13-4 victory, spoiling the start of Cincinnati's Big Red Machine weekend.
The National League's top-scoring team in June kept at it, piling up four homers. San Diego is averaging 5.86 runs in the month. San Diego barely missed out on major league history when Adam Rosales filed out to the warning track in the ninth inning - only seven teams have scored in all nine innings of a game.
The runs came so often that it was hard to keep up.
''I had no idea it was even happening,'' Myers said of the near-brush with history.
His manager saw a run in every inning through eight and figured the Padres were close to something special heading into the ninth.
''I was wondering how rare that was,'' Andy Green said. ''It's been impressive. We've started to see production throughout the whole lineup.''
Myers had a solo shot off Cody Reed (0-1) in the first, singled home a run and had a bases-loaded double. Rosales also had a solo homer. Three of San Diego's four homers came off Cincinnati's bullpen, which has given up 57 this season, by far the most in the majors.
''I threw a lot of pitches,'' said Reed, who needed 104 to get through five innings. ''It was just an off night.''
San Diego has won 11 of its 14 games against Cincinnati in the last three seasons.
Colin Rea (4-3) got the win by going five innings and allowing four runs, only one earned.
The Reds honored their 1976 World Series championship team on the field pregame, and players wore throwback uniforms to the days of the Big Red Machine. Pete Rose, who will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame and have his No. 14 officially retired over the weekend, was the last player introduced.
Reds players got into the spirit of the throwback weekend. First baseman Joey Votto wore red stirrup socks like those from the Big Red Machine days. Billy Hamilton tripled and went into third base with a headfirst slide reminiscent of Rose.
The Padres manager was a Reds fan growing up in Kentucky. Green's favorite player was Davey Concepcion. He made sure he was in the Padres dugout to see him introduced before the game. Then he watched his team take over.
Myers' 17th homer in the first inning extended his torrid month. The first baseman has 10 homers in June, the most in a month by a Padres player since Chase Headley hit 10 during August 2012. Myers also singled home a run in the fourth and doubled with the bases loaded in the eighth. He's batting .349 in June with 28 RBIs in 22 games.
The game matched two last-place teams, and it played that way in the third inning. The Reds scored four times with the help of three walks and two errors. Jay Bruce's single with the bases loaded drove in the final two runs.
YOU'RE GONE
Reds manager Bryan Price was ejected in the third inning by plate umpire Toby Basner for arguing over a called third strike to Tucker Barnhart. It was Price's seventh career ejection and his second this season.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: OF Jon Jay was out of the lineup for the fourth straight game. He was hit on the right forearm by a pitch on Sunday. Green said he'll be examined in San Diego on Monday to determine whether he needs to go on the disabled list.
Reds: Votto was back in the starting lineup. He missed two games and was limited to a pinch-hit appearance in the third game because of a stomach ailment. Votto went 0 for 3 with a pair of walks.
UP NEXT
Padres: LH Drew Pomeranz (6-7, 3.00) is holding opponents to a .195 batting average, fourth-best in the NL. He has eight quality starts in 14 appearances.
Reds: LH Brandon Finnegan (3-5, 3.81) has allowed three earned runs or less in 12 of his 15 starts. He's been the victim of a blown save three times.
