The New York Mets may reportedly be unsure about a reunion with shortstop Jose Reyes, but the feeling isn't mutual.

Reyes is desperate to return to the place where he began his career and made a name for himself, reports the New York Post, citing a baseball official who recently had a conversation with Reyes.

The 33-year-old shortstop, who was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies last week, "desperately longs" for a reunion with the team he spent the first nine seasons of his career, according to the report.

New York has a clear need for infield help after third baseman David Wright underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his neck last week, shelving him for at least three months.

Reyes could offer a solution to the problem, sliding in to play his natural position at shortstop or attempt to learn a new position at third.

"He’s got a lot left - lots of energy. They should sign him," an MLB talent evaluator told The Post. "They haven’t had a leadoff hitter since he left. ... It’s a no-brainer. ... I would put him at shortstop. He’s got a cannon still and a lot of range. I know (Asdrubal) Cabrera has done a nice job, but you can move him (to third or second). I think they are crazy if they don’t sign him."

Reyes' return to the Mets clubhouse would be a welcomed one according to manager Terry Collins, who had nothing but nice things to say about the four-time All-Star.

"He’s a ball. He brings energy to the team, he’s got a great smile, he loves to play and he loves to play here," Collins said. "He comes every day and wants to be in the lineup, but even then on the days we gave him off, he still kept him ready in case we needed him."

Reyes, who violated the league's domestic violence policy after a feud with his wife in Hawaii this past October, recently ended a minor-league assignment at Triple-A after he was suspended 51 games for the altercation.

The three-time stolen base champion owns a career slash line of .290/.339/.431 with 118 home runs, 621 RBIs, 117 triples and 479 stolen bases.
