D-Backs rough up Fernandez after perfect start

Jose Fernandez was perfectly untouchable for 5 2/3 innings Saturday. Then the Arizona Diamondbacks woke up.

The Miami Marlins ace had struck out eight while commanding the strike zone with precision until Michael Bourn walked to the plate in the sixth. He began the Arizona onslaught by taking a 96-mph fastball from Fernandez over the right-field wall, ending his perfect game and no-hit bid while cutting Miami's lead to 2-1.

From there, Fernandez simply unraveled. Jean Segura singled and Jake Lamb doubled him home to tie the game. Next up was Paul Goldschmidt, who lined a single to score Segura, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. David Peralta completed the comeback with an RBI triple to score Goldschmidt and open up a 4-2 lead for the home side.

The Diamondbacks would add another run off the Marlins' bullpen and triumphed over the visitors 5-3. Fernandez was handed his third loss of the year despite an eight-strikeout, zero-walk performance - all because of a disaster of one-third of an inning.

"That's the funny thing about baseball that anybody at any point can do damage," Fernandez told MLB.com. "Even the pitcher, you have to be careful all of the time. Life is good. I can tell you that, life is good."
