Bautista to see specialist for more tests on injured toe

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista will undergo tests Monday to determine if he suffered any additional damage in his left foot after injuring his toe while trying to make a catch.

Bautista was diagnosed with a hyperextended big toe after jamming it into the outfield wall in Philadelphia during the seventh inning of Thursday's 13-2 win over the Phillies. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday and remains in a walking boot to avoid additional swelling.

"He's going to see a foot-ankle specialist, Dr. Robert Anderson," Blue Jays trainer George Poulis told MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm on Saturday. "He's one of the team physicians for the Carolina Panthers. Sprained toe, unfortunately it was a weekend, otherwise he would have already seen him."

Bautista had just returned Monday from a three-game absence due to thigh soreness prior to Thursday's exit. Now, in a best-case scenario, he won't be eligible to return until July 2.

"There is no fracture so far; hopefully it stays that way with further testing," Bautista said Friday. "We'll see. Hopefully I'll get a good prognosis from the specialist and it's not as bad as I guess it can be."

The six-time All-Star is hitting .230/.360/.455 with 12 homers and an AL-leading 48 walks this season.
