Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left Monday's series opener against the New York Mets in the top of the fourth inning after being hit in the left hand by a 98-mph fastball from right-hander Noah Syndergaard.

Phillips, who hadn't been hit by a pitch since Opening Day, dropped to the ground almost immediately after being hit by the Syndergaard offering and writhed on all fours as he was attended to by a team trainer. After walking off the field, Phillips was replaced by pinch-runner Ivan De Jesus Jr.

Shortly thereafter, the Reds announced that X-rays on Phillips' left ring finger were negative.

Before exiting, Phillips extended his hitting streak against the Mets in New York to 33 games with an infield single off Syndergaard in the top of the second. Moments later, the 34-year-old swiped second for his third stolen base of the season.

Heading into Monday's contest at Citi Field, Phillips had hit .297/.324/.453 (103 OPS+) with one home run, five doubles, and one triple through his first 17 games of 2016.
