Bonds: A-Rod won't break my HR record in 2 years

Miami Marlins hitting coach Barry Bonds has a lot of faith in Alex Rodriguez closing his career in historic fashion, but he's not convinced A-Rod will be able to break his home run record.

"Not in two years," Bonds told MLB.com's Barry M. Bloom. "He said he's only going to play two more years. He said he's retiring. So he's not going to do it in two more years if he's retiring."

Rodriguez, who currently has 688 home runs, needs to hit 75 more in order to pass Bonds and become the all-time king of the long ball.

Although the 41-year-old A-Rod went yard 33 times during a turnaround 2015 campaign, Bonds doubts the mathematical stars will align for Rodriguez to catch him.

"It's nothing against A-Rod. I love the guy. He's one of my best friends," Bonds explained. "But just do the math. He'd have to hit close to 40 a year just to get there. He's the one who set the bar of retirement at two years. I don't think he can do that in two years. I'm just trying to be realistic.

"But in three years, if he plays longer, he could do it. If he says he's retiring, then, 'No, you won't.'"

Bonds does, however, foresee Rodriguez passing Babe Ruth - who hit 714 home runs - on the list of the game's elite power hitters.

"I know he can get that one," Bonds said. "I think he can hit 30 homers this year, I know he can hit 30 homers."
