David De Gea's failed transfer to Real Madrid, which collapsed in spectacular fashion at the end of last year's summer transfer window, is under the spotlight once again.

On Tuesday, Football Leaks published a document that the whistle-blowing website claims is the contract De Gea was due to sign at Real Madrid before the transfer ultimately fell through. As the Press Association explains, the record illustrates De Gea would've earned €11,818,182 (£9.2 million) for each of the six seasons from 2015-16 to 2020-21, and also mentions a break clause valued at €500 million (£388 million) that he would've had to pay to walk out of the deal.

The transfer, reportedly valued at €40 million (£29 million), collapsed when the required paperwork was not filed in time to beat the Spanish transfer deadline, resulting in Real Madrid and United pointing the finger at the other, as each club issued a 10-point statement defending its behaviour and detailing its version of what transpired in the moments leading up to the summer transfer window's closure.

After the transfer fell through, De Gea put pen to paper on a new four-year contract with United that also includes an option for an extra year. The deal was reportedly worth €256 million (£200,000) per week, which comes out to more than Real Madrid would have paid the Spanish 'keeper if Football Leaks' document is in fact the contract that he was set to sign.
