The outcome of Neymar's tax-related scandal will have a direct impact on his future at Barcelona.

In conversation with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Neymar's father, who also serves as the player's agent, didn't hesitate to admit that a contract extension would not be signed until legal and tax assurances are given, as he and his son are the target of tax authorities in both Spain and Brazil.

"We've begun contract renewal talks, but there are outstanding issues that concern us, and which need to be resolved" Neymar Sr. said, according to the Press Association. "Since we arrived to Spain we have been under attack (from the tax office) and it has extended to Brazil. For the last two and a half years, we have had to defend ourselves from accusations.

"We will respect Neymar's contract with Barca but regarding that contract extension, we need a deal that gives us peace of mind for Neymar, my companies, and my family. We are not thinking of leaving Spain but we have a problem. We've never experienced such major tax issues. I don't want to use the word persecution, but if the working environment here is not good, we won't be able to remain in Spain and will have to leave the country."

Back in May, a Spanish judge leading a probe into the real cost of Neymar's controversial transfer from Santos ruled that there's enough evidence to try Barcelona for alleged tax evasion.

Barcelona insists it paid no more than €57 million for Neymar. However, the case's first investigating magistrate, Pablo Ruz, says Neymar cost €83 million, and alleges the Catalan club hid the real price in a tangle of contracts.

In Brazil, however, Neymar and his father are dealing with a separate tax-related scandal, as the Tribunal Regional Federal da 3a Regiao, seated in Sao Paulo, froze R$188.8 million (€42.5 million, $48 million) in assets belonging to Neymar, his family, and related businesses in September. The court alleges that Neymar evaded R$63 million (€14.2 million, $15.9 million) in Brazilian taxes, alleging, according to The Associated Press, that he only declared R$19.6 million (€4.4 million, $4.9 million)
