Ronaldo could be punished for Clasico goal celebration, says La Liga president

Cristiano Ronaldo could be in some hot water.

La Liga president Javier Tebas says the Real Madrid star may be punished for his seemingly innocuous goal celebration after scoring in the 2-1 loss to Barcelona in Sunday's Clasico.

The Portuguese attacker, who was jeered each time he touched the ball by some 98,000 supporters inside the Camp Nou, seemed to simply urge the fans to calm down after he scored his 31st goal of the season. It's a celebration Ronaldo has made his own in recent years.

Regardless, Tebas says the circumstances surrounding the celebration could warrant some form of sanction.

"We have to be careful with provocative gestures by a player when he scores a goal or with any other provocation or conduct that could incite violence among spectators," Tebas said, according to Reuters.

"It must be sanctioned, from a fine up to a suspension. We will look into it."

He won't be suspended, so eliminate any talk of that right away.

It would come as a surprise if Ronaldo was hit with a fine at all, considering he did nothing more egregious than what any number of players have been doing for years now.

Their sport may share the same name, but La Liga edging towards the National Football League's stringent (and ridiculous) policy against touchdown celebrations would be a mistake.

It is just a game, after all. It's supposed to be fun.
