Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has extended his stay in Qatar, adding a year to his contract with Al Saad, the club announced Thursday.

The agreement will see the Spanish talisman remain in the Qatar Stars League until 2018.

"Xavi had earlier joined the team at the start of the 2015/6 season after signing a two-year contract," the statement read.

"With this extension, he is now set to complete three years at the club."

The 37-year-old midfield maestro wears the captains armband for Al Saad and helped the club finish third in the league last year, his debut campaign in Qatar.

This year, the club is looking to improve on that finish, currently sitting in second place, trailing Lekhwiya by three points after 17 matches.

Xavi's initial contract was in the vicinity of €10 million per year, according to Joaquín Maroto from AS.

The Spanish veteran is still showcasing the touches of class on which his legacy was built.

He scored a special free-kick last month - in the Qatari equivalent of El Classico - showcasing his pin-point precision.
