Carvajal hands Real Madrid 3rd Super Cup win with late extra-time winner

Real Madrid twice left it late to win its third Super Cup on Tuesday, relying on Sergio Ramos' 93rd-minute equaliser and Dani Carvajal's brilliant solo effort in the 119th minute of extra time to clinch a comeback victory over Sevilla.

It was Ramos who handed Los Blancos a lifeline. Sevilla had built a 2-1 lead towards the end of normal time through goals from debutant Franco Vazquez and substitute Yevhen Konoplyanka, but slack defending allowed the Madrid captain to nod in an uncontested leveller.

The Spain international saved the 2014 Champions League final in similar circumstances. Ramos scored a crucial header against Atletico Madrid that night to extend the match - also in the 93rd minute.

Madrid enjoyed the most dominant spell in extra time after defender Timothee Kolodziejczak was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico gobbled up several attempts to keep the Andalusian club alive in Norway, but once again a sheer breakdown in communication led to the winner.

As Carvajal darted into the final third, four Sevilla defenders sat back and invited the marauding full-back into the penalty area. Summer signing Matias Kranevitter and centre-back Adil Rami backed off and allowed Carvajal to steal the trophy.

Three-time Europa League winner Sevilla has now lost every Super Cup final since 2014 - once to Barcelona and twice to Madrid.
