Villarreal, also known as the Yellow Submarine, just can't be shot down when it comes to European football, setting a new club record Thursday by remaining unbeaten in 12 consecutive European matches.

In the first leg of the tie between Villarreal and Liverpool in the Europa League's semi-finals, a scoreless draw was on the horizon, as neither club had been able to find a way past Sergio Asenjo and Simon Mignolet.

Then, deep into second-half stoppage time, Villarreal produced a stunning counter-attack in which Denis Suarez selflessly laid off a pass for Adrian Lopez. He merely needed to tap the ball into an empty net with one of the last kicks of the fixture, sending El Madrigal and the 25,000 supporters inside into a frenzy.

Like so many of Villarreal's other goals this season, it illustrated the selflessness that characterizes Marcelino Garcia Toral's side.

By virtue of its 1-0 victory, Villarreal became the first club to defeat Liverpool in the ongoing edition of the Europa League - and established a streak the Yellow Submarine had never previously reached in its 93 years of existence.

The second leg goes May 5 at Anfield, and history is certainly on Villarreal's side.
