Torres brushes off potential Spain recall: 'Better they call Saul'

Vicente del Bosque better call Saul.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has the support of teammate Fernando Torres, who would like to see his younger teammate play in his place with the Spanish national team.

"I didn't ask for a call, and I don't want one. What I would have liked will stay with me, because I don't want my words to harm the team," he told Marca Radio, as translated by AS. "I have no problems with Vicente or the technical team.

"Better they call Saul."

Saul captured the attention of onlookers after slaloming his way past the Bayern Munich defence in Wednesday's 1-0 win. He also proved his defensive awareness, with the 21-year-old often tracking back and boxing out his Bavarian opponents.

But Torres' second stint at Atletico is equally difficult to overlook. After returning to the Vicente Calderon last year on loan from AC Milan, the Spaniard has often looked like the blistering forward that lit up La Liga in the 2000s and eventually secured a move to Liverpool.

"I was at a point when I needed something to bring back the excitement, to feel motivated, to feel part of a group that wanted to compete," he said. "I needed to believe in something and feel the excitement again, and I couldn't find it anywhere else.

"Coming back here gave me what I needed in that moment. I was back fighting for something that I've always wanted. I'm lucky enough to have a family that has always supported my decisions."

Torres has five goals in his past seven Atletico matches, enough to register the interest of Spain manager Del Bosque ahead of Euro 2016. The 32-year-old hasn't featured for his country in almost two years, and he's apparently not too keen on playing for the 2010 World Cup winner again.

His future at the club level is also a matter of debate. A potential transfer ban, which has been suspended upon appeal, could prevent Atletico from signing Torres outright in the summer.

Not that it bothers Torres right now.

"It's just unreal to be able to enjoy this moment with the team. It's fantastic," he added. "I've had the luck to enjoy it from the stands, from my time at other teams, and being able to live in from the inside of the club is something special.

"I'm loving every minute. The future? No, no, I live in the present."
