Depay arrives in Lyon ahead of potential €25M switch from United

Memphis Depay is finally being rescued from the Manchester United bench.

The seldom-used Dutchman is on his way to Ligue 1 giant Lyon, as Jamie Jackson of the Guardian reports the two clubs have come to terms on an agreement that could be worth €25 million if certain clauses are triggered.

Depay arrived in the French city Wednesday night, and the club confirmed discussions will take place Thursday over personal terms.

"The Netherlands international Memphis Depay has arrived in Lyon to discuss the terms of his future contract with OL, and will be assisted by his agents who'll arrive on Thursday," the above tweet reads.

Should Lyon qualify for the Champions League, or Depay sign a new deal with the French club, the initial €17-million transfer fee will rise, according to Jackson.

Multiple reports indicate the Red Devils have inserted a buy-back option in the deal, as well as a sell-on clause should the talented 22-year-old winger move once again in the future.

Depay, who has made a mere four Premier League appearances this season - all as a substitute - has been rooted to the Old Trafford bench since arriving at the club amid much fanfare.

Signed from PSV Eindhoven by compatriot Louis van Gaal for €34 million in May 2015, Depay has failed to live up to significant expectations he crafted after being a dominant force in the Eredivisie.

Even if the aforementioned add-ons are triggered, United will be forced to take a loss on the Dutchman. Jackson notes, however, that simply getting his roughly £75,000-per-week salary off the books was incentive enough.

The likes of Liverpool and Roma were said to be interested in loan deals for the former Eredivisie top scorer, but Lyon's permanent offer surely made Les Gones the preferred option of the United brass.

Still immensely talented and only 22 years old, Depay should get every opportunity to reignite a career that was stagnating in Manchester.
