After Zlatan: Top 5 stars who could be on the move next

Reuters

Now that the Zlatan Ibrahimovic transfer saga is over, it's time to pass the torch on to the next player who will become king of the gossip columns.

While he's arguably the first major domino to fall this summer, Ibrahimovic certainly won't be the last as teams across Europe look to upgrade ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

And, at 34, the Swedish star may not end up being the biggest star to switch teams as potential transfers involving young talents, such as Paul Pogba and James Rodriguez, have the potential to create a bigger buzz than an aging striker signing with a Manchester United side that failed to make the Champions League.

Here's a look at the biggest stars who will take over Ibra's place as ruler of the transfer headlines:

Paul Pogba, Juventus

The most likely successor to Ibrahimovic's throne has to be Pogba.

The 23-year-old France international has been forced to field questions over his future ever since he left Manchester United in 2012 for greener pastures at Juventus, where he's played a vital role in helping the team capture multiple trophies.

From Barcelona to a return to Old Trafford, it's anyone's bet as to where Pogba will bring his skills next. But, if gossip columns are anything to go by (they're usually not) a transfer to Real Madrid could be on the horizon with manager Zinedine Zidane keeping a close eye on his fellow countryman.

Possible landing spot: Real Madrid

James Rodriguez, Real Madrid

Just two summers removed from securing the services of James Rodriguez, Real Madrid could be in search of an interested suitor willing to take the playmaker off its hands.

And the Spanish side shouldn't have a problem finding one after yet another dominating display on the international stage with Colombia at the Copa America Centenario, where he scored two goals and provided an assist to help the country finish third.

A move to England may be his next stop as Jose Mourinho looks to reshuffle the squad ahead of his first season, and could look to his former club for reinforcements.

Possible landing spot: Manchester United

Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli

The rumour mill is beginning to pick-up after Gonzalo Higuain reportedly rejected Napoli's attempt to sign him to a new contract.

After Arsenal found itself on the losing end of the Higuain sweepstakes in 2014, the north London side could make a second attempt to sign Serie A's top scorer, considering its attacking unit last term has shown little signs of improvement compared to the Arsenal outfit he could have joined two summers ago.

Possible landing spot: Arsenal

Edinson Cavani, Paris Saint-Germain

There could be a complete overhaul to Paris Saint-Germain's attacking scheme if Edinson Cavani joins Ibrahimovic through the exit door at the Parc des Princes.

It's no secret that the Uruguayan was unsettled in the French capital in his third year since PSG lured him away from Napoli for £55 million. But his views may have changed with the Swedish forward's move to United, and his current role as the team's biggest threat up top.

However, with the transfer window kicking into full gear, there's no telling who PSG might add this summer and whether Cavani will once again be pushed down the depth chart as a result.

Possible landing spot: Atletico Madrid

Romelu Lukaku, Everton

The only thing that appears to be certain is Romelu Lukaku's desire to leave Everton. Reports suggesting a move back to Chelsea are in contrast to rumours the Belgian is eager to join a Champions League team, considering the Blues fell well short of a berth into the prestigious competition.

Perhaps a move to a side rarely linked to Lukaku could surprise the football world, such as a transfer to Italian champions Juventus. The price tag might be the major obstable that could ultimately price Juve out of the Lukaku sweepstakes.

Possible landing spot: Chelsea
