Pulisic, Altidore lead USMNT to the Hex; Mexico awaits in 1st match

The United States is heading to the Hex. As if there was any doubt.

Only a monumental collapse would have seen the Americans' World Cup qualifying campaign come to an end Tuesday, and a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago ensured that would not be the case.

Jozy Altidore, firing on all cylinders for club and country since his return from a hamstring injury, netted a quickfire brace in the second half, becoming the United States' all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying in the process.

It was fitting that teenager Christian Pulisic teed up the powerful striker for his second tally, as the blossoming star was the best player on the pitch at EverBank Field.

Sacha Kljestan, back in the fold after an extended absence from the international scene, opened the scoring before Altidore secured all three points - and with them, a spot in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Paul Arriola rounded out the scoring, the substitute capping the blowout with a tap-in on a Pulisic rebound.

By virtue of the victory, the Americans top their group, and will meet perennial rival Mexico on Nov. 11 in the opening match of the Hex.
