Rapids' Dillon Powers heads on 2-week trial with English outfit Reading

Colorado Rapids mid-fielder Dillon Powers is set to spend the next two weeks on trial with English Championship side Reading FC, which started Sunday.

Rapids' technical director Paul Bravo said the move comes when the team is looking to revamp its look, after a last-place finish in the Western Conference in 2015.

"This is a good opportunity for Dillon to test himself alongside quality players and, we believe, another indication of our ability to develop talent," Bravo said in a statement. "We wish Dillon the best of luck."

Rapids' brass named Powers one of the bright spots on the team this season and Bravo knows the chance of losing Powers isn't much of a long shot.

"They've done their due diligence on him," Bravo told reporters. "With some of the injury issues that they're having currently, they're looking at this as a potential to take Dillon on.

"Dillon is a player that we should be looking to build around, because he does embody a lot of what we are trying to do around here."

Powers - who will link up with fellow American mid-fielder, Danny Williams, at Hogwood Park - arrived in England on Sunday to begin his trial. Upon conclusion, Reading could potentially make a transfer offer.

"If a young man has a dream and you’ve been there along with him, you’ve got to share in that dream," Bravo said. "From day one, he has been very clear with his intentions. He’s a very sharp young man and has everything thought though. Europe is something that he would like to experience."

Powers, 24, made 32 appearances this season with Coloado, leading the team with six assists. He joined the club out of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft and has scored 13 goals and recorded 21 assists in 92 appearances. He was named MLS Rookie of the Year in 2013.
