Report: Brad Guzan's future at Villa in doubt as club seeks new 'keeper

Aston Villa is planning to table a bid for Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius in the January transfer window, leaving the future of its current No. 1 - Brad Guzan - in doubt, according to Matt Law from the Telegraph.

Manager Tim Sherwood didn't seem overly enamoured with the American when he took over at Villa Park in February, and dropped him for the FA Cup final loss to Arsenal in May.

Mark Bunn was signed to put pressure on the 'keeper starting berth this season, and the club talked to Brentford about talented shot stopper David Button, but now Sherwood looks to bring in an undisputed replacement.

Glowing references have come from scout Tony Coton, who believes Karius fits the mould.

The 22-year-old has represented Germany at every youth level, and since his move from the Manchester City academy in 2012 has established himself as one of the standout goalkeepers of the Bundesliga with the Rhineland-Palatinate club.

Villa has begun the campaign poorly, and currently sits four points adrift of safety in the relegation zone. While defence isn't its biggest issue right now, plugging up the gap at the back could be helpful as it isn't getting much help in attack with only eight goals scored.

The Birmingham club returns after the international break to make the trip to English champion Chelsea on Oct. 17.
