An ankle injury will force Wayne Rooney to miss England's next Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia, the Football Association confirmed.

The Manchester United captain has been unable to train with his international teammates leading up to the fixture after suffering the injury in Sunday's loss to Arsenal.

"Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia so vice-captain Gary Cahill will lead the Three Lions out at Wembley Stadium on Friday night," the FA said in a statement.

He will however, attend the game at Wembley Stadium, where he'll be honoured before the encounter for becoming the country's scoring leader after breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's record last month against Switzerland.

With England's qualification in the tournament already secured, it's unknown whether Rooney will even travel to Lithuania for the country's final qualification match Oct. 12.
