Report: Arsenal players surprised Wenger selected Ospina over Cech

Along with rest of the football world, it appears Arsenal players were baffled by manager Arsene Wenger's decision to give David Ospina the start against Olympiacos instead of summer signing Petr Cech.

Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph reports that players were surprised by the choice to start the Colombian netminder, despite Cech's declaration that he was fit to participate in the fixture.

Wenger, however, lashed out at the media after the game, saying other people didn't know the inner workings of the team and the reasons behind his decision. He also said Cech had been left out because of "a slight alert" regarding an injury and wasn't willing to take a risk with the 33-year-old.

The "alert" was a minor calf injury and Cech had hoped to start the match, according to Wilson.

Instead, it appears Cech will get a start between the sticks Sunday when Arsenal hosts Manchester United.

Ospina - whose blunder in goal during a corner-kick deflated the Gunners and eventually led to a 3-2 loss - was reportedly promised first-team opportunities shortly after Cech joined Arsenal from Chelsea.

But it's expected Cech will also get the start in the team's critical meeting with Bayern Munich in its next Champions League fixture, despite Wenger saying he'll take a "game by game" approach when deciding his 'keeper.
