Harry Kane breaks his duck, Tottenham roars back to hammer Manchester City

Everything was going so well for Kevin De Bruyne - and, by extension, Manchester City.

The ginger midfielder, who joined City this summer from VfL Wolfsburg in one of the more protracted sagas of the window, opened the scoring in a frenetic contest at White Hart Lane by finishing off a blistering counter-attack in the opening half, netting his third goal in as many matches to give the Citizens a 1-0 lead over Tottenham in the 25th minute.

It had only been two-and-a-half matches, but the 24-year-old was doing a fine job of justifying his mammoth £54-million transfer fee, endearing himself almost instantly to City supporters.

And then, nearly as quickly as he gave the Citizens some joy, he took it away.

A brutal giveaway on the stroke of halftime by the Belgian allowed Eric Dier, of all people, to riffle a low strike off the post and beyond Willy Caballero - who was starting in place of Joe Hart.

The goal came after a whirlwind sequence that saw the linesman inexplicably miss an offside call against full-back Kyle Walker, who was easily three yards ahead of the play before whipping in a low cross that, after being redirected and saved by Caballero, fell to De Bruyne, who gifted it back to Dier for the goal.

Walker is one of the fastest players in the league, but short of being the Flash, there's no conceivable explanation for how the linesman could have missed this one ...

Contentious as it was, the goal opened the floodgates for Spurs, who came flying out of the interval en route to a 4-1 victory.

Toby Alderweireld scored five minutes into the second half, nodding a header past a woefully out-of-position Caballero, before Harry Kane finally ended his goal drought, tapping a rebound into an open goal after Christian Eriksen blasted a free-kick off the post.

Erik Lamela capped the comeback in the 79th minute, consigning City to its third defeat in four matches (in all competitions).
