Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck out for 'months' after knee surgery
Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck will be out of commission for a few months after undergoing an operation for a left knee injury he suffered in April, the club confirmed Wednesday.
The club had been trying to rehabilitate Welbeck in order to keep him from going under the knife.
"It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field," the club explained in a statement on its official site.
"Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well," the statement concluded.
Welbeck, 24, scored eight goals in his first 34 Arsenal games before April's injury sidelined him.
Losing Welbeck comes at an unfortunate time for the club, since Arsenal fans are already frustrated with the team's limited options up top and a lack of spending in the summer transfer window.
