The transfer will cost Sunderland £7.75 million, with the possibility of the fee rising to £9.75 million if certain clauses in the agreement are reached, according to Sky Sports.

Borini registered seven goals in 32 games with Sunderland during his season-long loan move to the Tyne and Wear club during the 2013-14 campaign.

"I am delighted to be back at Sunderland. It is a club I know really well from my time here previously," he said on the team's website.

"It will be emotional for me to play at the Stadium of Light again and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch as a Sunderland player."

His versatility in attack is an aspect of Borini's game that made him an attractive purchase for manager Dick Advocaat, as Sunderland were successful in beating Inter Milan for the right to sign the 24-year-old.

"Fabio is a great addition to the squad who will make our front line stronger. He can play in a number of attacking positions which is a huge benefit to the team," the Dutch boss said.
