Transfer Roundup: Winners and losers from the summer window so far

Reuters

Here are the winners and losers from the Premier League's summer transfer window thus far:

Winners

Manchester United

Manchester United made one of the biggest splashes in the transfer market this summer after overhauling the squad that vaulted it back into the top four. The additions of Memphis Depay (from PSV Eindhoven), Morgan Schneiderlin (from Southampton), Bastian Schweinsteiger (from Bayern Munich) and Matteo Darmian (from Torino) have the potential to push the Reds over the top and into position to legitimately challenge for the league title for the first time in three seasons.

Crystal Palace

Looking to cement its place as a top-half club, Crystal Palace made some shrewd moves in signing Yohan Cabaye (from Paris Saint-Germain), Connor Wickham (from Sunderland), Patrick Bamford (on loan from Chelsea), and Bakary Sako (from Wolverhampton). Sako was one of the Championship's top wingers last season and Wickham has the skillset to be a top-level goalscorer with consistent minutes. The wild card is Cabaye, who was out of favour with Laurent Blanc's PSG. Should he regain the form he exhibited with Newcastle United, the Eagles could be formidable this year.

West Ham

In what will be its final season at the iconic Upton Park, West Ham United will take the pitch with some phenomenal names. An impressive summer transfer window saw the club sign Pedro Obiang (from Sampdoria), Dimitri Payet (from Olympique Marseille), and Angelo Ogbonna (from Juventus), while also retaining Carl Jenkinson courtesy of another season-long loan. Such names are potentially capable of transforming West Ham into the European contender it hopes to be.

Aston Villa

Following the departure of striker Christian Benteke and midfield anchor Fabian Delph, Tim Sherwood's Villans had several holes to fill. With the acquisition of Idrissa Gueye (from Lille OSC) and three Ligue 1 Jordans - Jordan Ayew (from Lorient), Jordan Amavi (from OGC Nice), and Jordan Veretout (Nantes) - the Birmingham club has identified and addressed depth issues in one fell swoop. Will the new additions measure up to Premier League standards? Only time will tell.

Losers

Chelsea

Chelsea's lack of activity in the summer transfer window is obviously down to Jose Mourinho's desire for continuity. That said, the two players who did put pen to paper at Stamford Bridge are a washed-up forward and a 'keeper who will be lucky to take the pitch in one Premier League fixture. For whatever reason, Mourinho is under the impression Radamel Falcao's club career is salvageable, despite train wreck after train wreck from the Colombian forward. As to why a 'keeper of Asmir Begovic's quality is willing to be an understudy, the answer likely contains a pound sign.

Liverpool

Liverpool wins the "most summer signings" contest, but likely won't come out on top of as the most successful buyer when all is said and done. While the team's injection of several talented players such as Christian Benteke (from Villa) and Nathaniel Clyne (from Southampton) appears to set Liverpool up for an improved campaign, the Merseyside club could be in danger of suffering the same disappointing fate as Tottenham Hotspur after its massive 2013 overhaul.
