Lyon - Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara underwent surgery on his right knee in Lyon and will be ruled out until the end of the season, a medical source said on Friday.
The 22-year left-back has been out of action since suffering a knee injury in the Magpies' 1-0 win over Aston Villa on February 28.
Haidara's absence, on top of captain Fabricio Coloccini's suspension and the season-ending injuries of Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett, has left coach John Carver with a patched-up back four as they head to Premier League strugglers Sunderland on Sunday.
Haidara joined Newcastle from French side Nancy in the January 2013 transfer window, becoming the fourth of five Frenchmen to check in at St. James' Park that month.
