Manchester United director David Gill set to be elected FIFA vice-president

Manchester United director David Gill should soon be working alongside FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

After changing his mind about working with Blatter and choosing to stand for the FIFA vice-presidency, Gill is expected to easily beat rival candidate Trefor Lloyd Hughes, president of the Welsh Football Association, reports the Associated Press.

The appointment is selected by all UEFA members. Football Association chairman Greg Dyke is backing Gill's nomination since he believes Gill will be able to expose wrongdoing within controversy-marred FIFA.

"David will be the sort of person who will do the job as a FIFA executive committee member properly," Dyke said. "He will not be afraid of asking appropriate questions. In fact perhaps FIFA needs to have someone from the awkward squad asking tough questions.

"He has a strong background in finance so if there are financial questions he will know what to ask and what to look for. There is a feeling that there have been too many acolytes and not enough people asking difficult questions and ensuring that decisions are taken in a transparent, ethical, and business-like manner."

Assuming Gill is appointed, he'll join FIFA's executive committee after their presidential election on May 29 and will replace Jim Boyce of Northern Ireland.
