Gary Cahill confirmed as England's new vice-captain

In case you didn't notice, it was Gary Cahill who was handed the captain's armband after newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney was subbed off in England's 2-0 win over Switzerland on Monday. Such was also the case in England's 1-0 friendly win against Norway last week.

The transfer of the armband inevitably led to some speculation surrounding whether or not Cahill was officially England's No. 2 in command. And on Wednesday, Chelsea confirmed that the 28-year-old centre-back is indeed the Three Lions' new vice-captain.

Cahill claims that manager Roy Hodgson informed him of the new role between England's two recent victories.

"It was in training after the first game," Cahill said. "He decided and just pulled me to one side and let me know. Of course I was grateful and honored. I just look forward to playing for England with that added bonus now of maybe being captain one day if needed or if Wayne comes off or is unavailable.

"It's a massive honor. Even just to pull on an England shirt and play for England is a huge honor, but to have the added bonus of being vice-captain is amazing. To have the armband in the last two games, even for the short time that it was, felt fantastic."

Although John Terry remains Chelsea's captain for the time being, Cahill seems a logical candidate to take the club's armband once the 33-yard-old decides it's time to hang up the cleats.
