Report: Liverpool open talks with Coutinho over new long-term deal

Liverpool is ready to repay Philippe Coutinho for his match-winning efforts this season.

The Reds are discussing a new long-term contract with the Brazilian's representatives, according to the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce, despite only handing the player an improved five-year deal in 2015.

An ankle injury derailed what was a blazing start to the 2016-17 season, although he returned to action earlier this month.

He has thrived in manager Jurgen Klopp's high-pressing system, popping up everywhere on the pitch and providing goals as well as assists. He's tallied 17 strikes in 51 appearances under the German's tutelage.

His performances reportedly drew interest from Barcelona, and praise from midfield maestro Xavi - who suggested Coutinho is one of only a few players who can improve his former club - only added weight to the speculation.

Signed from Inter for a modest £8.5-million fee in January 2013, the 26-year-old is now the star attraction in Liverpool's title chase.

The Merseyside club is 10 points behind Premier League leader Chelsea.
