It took 12 years, three months, and 10 days, but Wayne Rooney can finally stand alongside Sir Bobby Charlton.

Speaking after he scored his 249th goal for Manchester United to join Charlton as the Red Devils' top scorer of all time, Rooney didn't hide the pride and honour he felt, and expressed his desire to surpass Sir Bobby, whose 249th goal came in 1973.

Rooney's historic goal came in the seventh minute of United's 4-0 victory over Reading in the FA Cup's third round, as the Red Devils' captain deflected a ball from Juan Mata past Ali Al Habsi.

"It's a proud moment especially to do so at such a massive club like Manchester United," Rooney told BT Sport. "I'm hugely honoured to be able to play for this football club and to be up there in terms of goals with Sir Bobby is a really proud moment for me. Hopefully I'll be out there on my own soon but I'll enjoy today because it's a real honour.

"I'm enjoying my football and I'm thankful to score again. It's a huge part of my life this football club and I'm really honoured to be up there alongside Sir Bobby.

"Of course you want to break records in front of your home fans. We've got two home games coming up (this week) so hopefully I can get the next one in one of those games. I'm delighted for today though and more importantly the result. There were a lot of changes and the lads have come in and shown they're if needed."

Rooney's first goal for United came on Sept. 28, 2004, when, on his debut for the Red Devils at 18 years of age, he notched a hat-trick in the club's 6-2 win against Fenerbahce in the Champions League. It's also worth noting he scored 249 goals in only 543 fixtures, whereas Charlton required 758 matches to do so.

Here's a breakdown of Rooney's 249 goals:

  • 194 goals in the Premier League
  • 39 goals in European competition
  • 22 goals in the FA Cup
  • 5 goals in the League Cup
  • 3 goals in the Club World Cup
  • 1 goal in the Community Shield
