Mikel John Obi is the latest footballer to ditch Europe to join the Chinese Super League.

The veteran midfielder announced Friday that he has decided to end his long association with Chelsea in order to accept a move to join Tianjin TEDA.

A statement on Mikel's Twitter account read: "I feel now is the time to seek a new challenge. I'm delighted to be joining Tianjin TEDA FC in China, at a time that the Chinese Super League is really taking off, and I look forward to helping Tianjin TEDA FC continue to grow both on and off the pitch in the next few years."

The 29-year-old had been linked with a move to China for much of the season after failing to find a place in Antonio Conte's squad since the Italian gaffer took charge at Chelsea last summer.

He was also connected with possible transfer to Valencia and Marseille, but it's believed neither side was willing to meet his wage demands.

Instead, reports indicate that Mikel - whose contract was set to expire in the summer - will see his weekly earnings increase from £85,000 to £140,000 per week.

The 29-year-old becomes the second player to depart Chelsea this month following Oscar's move to Shanghai SIPG.

Mikel's departure brings an end to his illustrious Chelsea career after playing a major role during one of the most successful eras in team history. Following his arrival in 2006 from Norwegian side Lyn, the Nigeria international went on to help the Blues secure countless trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.
