Premier League team of the weekend: Vardy party a bit tardy

Reuters

After another weekend of some great individual performances, theScore puts together a best XI from the latest slate of Premier League fixtures.

The lineup

Leicester City and Manchester United have been rewarded with two players apiece after both sides notched marquee victories over the weekend, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody, nary a Manchester City player got within a country mile of this list.

GK - David De Gea

Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea was one of three 'keepers to record a clean sheet Sunday (Fraser Forster, Thibaut Courtois), though the wiry Spanish international makes the list by virtue of facing four shots on target to his counterparts' three and one, respectively. This just in: he's good.

RB - Cesar Azpilicueta

Is there a more versatile defender in the league than Cesar Azpilicueta? Able to ply his trade at either full-back spot, the Spaniard has been employed this season on the right side of Antonio Conte's three-man backline to stellar results. Azpilicueta completed 78 of 86 passes and combined well with Victor Moses while winning four aerial duels.

CB - Virgil van Dijk

In football, metrics only tell half the story, unless you're Southampton centre-half Virgil van Dijk, who each week seemingly posts numbers better than the last. In Sunday's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough, Van Dijk won 100 percent of his aerial duels, 100 percent of all tackles, and made nine clearances and four interceptions while helping Forster notch another clean sheet.

LB - Christian Fuchs

Last season's PFA Team of the Year honouree appeared his former self Saturday against Manchester City, combining a penchant for tracking back with some overlapping play with Marc Albrighton. In far from a banner weekend for left-backs, the Austrian international gets the nod.

RM - Ander Herrera

After an experimental patch littered with omissions and oversights, Jose Mourinho has found his midfield pairing in Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera. The Spaniard's assist on Henrikh Mkhitaryan's match-winner was the difference against Tottenham amid a stellar opening half for the Bilbao-born metronome.

LM - Gylfi Sigurdsson

Two-goal Fernando Llorente was the hero against Sunderland, though it was Gylfi Sigurdsson who dictated activities Saturday at the Liberty Stadium. His penalty six minutes after the interval sent the Swans on their way, and his six key passes opened channels in the Black Cats' porous backline.

AM - Jeff Hendrick

On the heels of a standout performance with Ireland at Euro 2016, Burnley summer signing Jeff Hendrick continues to make a name for himself in England's top flight. Few goals are prettier than his effort against Bournemouth, and his quickness and versatility in all midfield roles continues to be a handful for defenders.

RW - Wilfried Zaha

England may yet rue letting Wilfried Zaha make the Ivory Coast switch as the winger continues a stellar run of form. His six assists in the league are second only to Kevin De Bruyne's seven and his third goal of the campaign against Hull was the highlight of an utterly sinister display.

LW - Theo Walcott

Ahead of the season, Arsenal's Theo Walcott made a pact with his missus: 10 goals in all comps before the holidays in exchange for a fancy coffee maker. After the England international reached that milestone with Saturday's match-winner against Stoke City, the pacey winger will be awake for days sipping on that bean water.

FW - Stefano Okaka

As bizarre as it seems to put the name Stefano Okaka in a team of the week, the Watford striker nips Diego Costa and Fernando Llorente for a spot. The Italian's first two Hornets goals were the deciding factor in a 3-2 win over Everton, the first of which was a world-class, stylish back-heel flick.

FW - Jamie Vardy

After a sluggish start to the campaign, Jamie Vardy was anything but lethargic in Saturday's match against Manchester City. The feisty Fox bagged a brace in the opening 20 minutes before completing the treble while simultaneously making a fool of summer signings John Stones and Claudio Bravo.
