Wenger: Trophies will convince stars to stay at Arsenal

Performances on the pitch will determine whether stars such as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will extend their stay with Arsenal, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

While Sanchez and Ozil both have two years remaining on their respective contracts, Wenger has previously revealed his confidence over completing new deals for the pair, but said he is in no rush.

The French gaffer is convinced that the pair, like most stars in football, are more concerned with winning silverware rather than worrying about adding to their already enormous wages.

"I think these kind of players can raise a little bit above the financial aspect of the game because they are not poor and they have to look really on the football side," Wenger told reporters ahead of Arsenal's Champions League clash with Ludogorets.

"We have a scale of wages but it has become a bit more individual than when I arrived 20 years ago because every case is a bit special. It has changed a little bit but anyway - you don't need to worry, they are all well paid.

"I blame nobody. If you were a player you would try the same. It has always been difficult to keep the good players. They have to feel that you meet their needs at the club and they get paid for it. Ideally you don't go into the final year but that is why we negotiate before.

Wenger has previously said that Ozil is open to renewing his deal to remain in north London, while Sanchez is reportedly reluctant to put pen to paper on a new contract as he holds out for a significant pay rise, as well as the inclusion of a buy-out clause.
