Thierry Henry drafted in as Belgium assistant

Thierry Henry has confirmed that he'll assist Roberto Martinez at the helm of the Belgium national team.

The winner of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France was last helping coach the youth players at former club Arsenal, but now assumes a role which will allow him to balance his training ground work with media commitments.

Despite arguably possessing the most impressive squad at Euro 2016, Marc Wilmots oversaw a disjointed Red Devils side that crashed out at the quarter-final stage to supposed minnow Wales. Wilmots was ousted after the tournament, resulting in the appointment of new manager Martinez.

And now Martinez, who joined Belgium following a disappointing campaign in charge of Everton, has added some considerable pedigree to his backroom staff in Henry.

News of the former Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona forward being drafted in surfaced on Friday - the same day that Belgium's squad was released for the friendly with Spain next Thursday and the 2018 World Cup qualifier in Cyprus five days later.

There were no standout call-ups and exclusions in Martinez's first roster, with the exception of Kevin Mirallas and Steven Defour who make their respective returns to international consideration.

Here is the squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea), Simon Mignolet (Liverpool), Matz Sels (Newcastle United)

Defenders: Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur), Christian Kabasele (Watford), Nicolas Lombaerts (Zenit St. Petersburg), Jordan Lukaku (Lazio), Thomas Meunier (Paris Saint-Germain), Thomas Vermaelen (AS Roma), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur)
