Wenger rails at 'scary' transfer fees

At the beginning of the last Premier League season, Gary Neville lambasted Arsene Wenger's refusal to sign powerful players, saying it must be because of "either naivety or arrogance."

The reason, however, may not be naivety or arrogance - or stubbornness, as Arsenal's supporters have often claimed - but fear of signing players who come with expensive transfer fees.

On Thursday, in a week where Gonzalo Higuain joined Napoli for €90 million and Paul Pogba is reportedly set to join Manchester United for a world-record fee, Wenger addressed the excessively high prices floating through the summer transfer window and described them as "scary."

"I personally believe that no matter what you do, it's never enough," Wenger said, according to Joseph D'Hippolito of the Guardian. "In the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious. With the cheques that everybody signs, it's quite scary. But I believe we know what we have to do."

Arsenal's signings thus far in the summer transfer window include Granit Xhaka for a reported fee of £25 million, Rob Holding for a reported fee of £2 million, and Takuma Asano for an undisclosed fee.
