Lampard relishing Drogba reunion: 'I can't wait to play against him'

Former Chelsea teammates Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba are set to square off for the first time since joining Major League Soccer when the Montreal Impact host New York City FC on Sunday.

Lampard comes into the match having scored four goals in his last five league appearances. Drogba has battled injuries recently, but has nonetheless been a goal-scoring force throughout his tenure in MLS.

At Stade Saputo, these old friends become new enemies.

"I can't wait to play against him because he's such a powerful presence and a person," Lampard told reporters, according to Dylan Butler of MLSsoccer.com. "We played with each other a lot of times. It will be nice to go against each other."

It's not the first time these two familiar footballers have faced off against on another, though. While still at Chelsea, Lampard took on a Galatasaray side featuring Drogba in a Champions League fixture at Stamford Bridge back on March 18, 2014.

In the years that followed, Drogba returned to Chelsea, Lampard was loaned to Manchester City and now the pair find themselves opposite one another in MLS.

"We're loving the experience of being here," Lampard said. "I think Didier is one of my top friends in football. It was an absolute pleasure to play with him, he's a gentleman and a leader in the dressing room, as we all saw in the back end of the Montreal season last year."

While these two teams have met before this season, Lampard was unavailable to play, hampered by a calf injury during the early goings of 2016. But back healthy and in fine form, the English midfielder is looking forward not only to playing against Drogba, but swapping shirts after the match, too

"I switched with him, even though I didn't play in the early game, but I'll switch with him again,” Lampard said. "You can't have enough proper shirts."
