Sturridge: Sterling one of the world's 'most talented players'

Daniel Sturridge has leaped to the defence of England colleague and former Liverpool teammate Raheem Sterling, hailing him as one of the best players in the world.

Sterling has been subject of criticism after continuing his torrid form at Manchester City on the international stage at Euro 2016, apparently prompting new club boss Pep Guardiola to call the winger who cost around £49 million last summer and offer him a message of support.

Now Sturridge has stepped in, although some may scoff at the striker's words claiming Sterling is among the planet's elite.

"It is just a matter of time before you see him take his game to the next level and I am sure that will be very soon," Sturridge told BBC Radio 5 Live, before stressing that the 21-year-old, who spent just over five years on Merseyside, can cope with criticism.

"Raheem is one of the strongest; he has got thick skin. He doesn't worry too much about what people say. He has to worry about his game and that is it. That is all he ever does," Sturridge continued.

"He works so hard on the training field and is one of the most talented players in the world."

Although Sturridge believes Sterling's criticism has been over the top, the Jamaican-born speedster has no assurances of making Roy Hodgson's XI against Iceland on Monday. Sturridge's chances appear more likely, particularly due to his goalscoring cameo for the Three Lions against Wales in the European Championship group stages.
