Blackburn names Owen Coyle as manager

Former Houston Dynamo head coach Owen Coyle has taken on a new challenge in his native Britain, as Blackburn Rovers announced the Scottish tactician as the club's new manager on a two-year contract Thursday.

Coyle parted ways with the Dynamo last week after a poor early showing in the 2016 MLS season, citing a desire to be closer to his family in the U.K. He has found a job that offers him exactly that, helming the English Championship outfit ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

"First and foremost I'm absolutely thrilled and honoured to be Blackburn Rovers manager and I look forward to working with terrific people at the club," Coyle said in a statement. "The ultimate aim is to give a team that is representative of the fans, a team that is entertaining and hardworking, and a team that can win."

Coyle will keep assistants Alan Irvine and Rob Kelly on his staff.

"We took our time and conducted a thorough search and Owen was the standout candidate," said Rovers director Mike Cheston.

"He brings with him a wealth of management experience, a strong track record in the Championship and we believe he will complement our existing coaching staff perfectly. He meets all of the criteria we were looking for and we firmly believe he is the right man to take this club forward."
