With the 2015-16 Premier League season now in the history books, theScore is looking back, counting down the top 20 players of the campaign.

Top 20 Premier League players: The rundown

  • No. 20 - 16
  • No. 15 - 11
  • No. 10 - 6 (May 26)
  • No. 5 - 1 (May 27)

No. 15 - Hector Bellerin (Arsenal)

2015-16 Premier League season: 36 appearances, 1 goal, 5 assists; 1.6 tackles, 1.9 interceptions per 90 minutes

Yet another product of Barcelona's famed talent-churning academy, La Masia, Hector Bellerin established himself as the premier right-back in England's top flight this season. He's only 21 years old. A constant presence down the right flank for the Gunners, the obscenely speedy Spaniard is adept both in his defensive duties and his ability to blaze down the pitch and offer an attacking outlet on a team that already boasts so many. Though he didn't make the cut this time around for Euro 2016, Bellerin figures to be a prominent part of the Spanish national team for years to come.

No. 14 - Christian Eriksen (Tottenham)

2015-16 Premier League season: 35 appearances, 6 goals, 13 assists; 3.5 key passes, 3.1 shots per 90 minutes

Harry Kane scored the goals and breakout stud Dele Alli won many of the plaudits for the simple fact that nobody saw his monstrous season coming, but all the while, Christian Eriksen quietly pulled the strings for Tottenham in midfield. The Danish playmaker finished the campaign second in assists, with only Mesut Ozil's (almost historic) season topping him in that regard. Still only 24 years old, Eriksen's menacing dead-ball delivery and ability to pick out incisive passes deserve far more credit than they receive. He's a star.

No. 13 - Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

2015-16 Premier League season: 37 appearances, 18 goals, 6 assists; 3.3 shots, 1.4 key passes per 90 minutes

Seemingly assured to be on his way to one of Europe's superpowers this summer, hulking Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku experienced a duplicitous campaign; dominant in the first half, his season was dragged down by the momentous struggles of his side after the turn of the calendar. The 23-year-old finished fourth in Premier League scoring, netting 18 league goals, but only four of those came in 2016. His lone bright spot after 2015 was relegated to the rearview mirror, however, was a memorable one. His brace in the FA Cup quarter-final against former side Chelsea included a stunning tally that showcased the pace, power, trickery, and finishing ability that has made him one of the hottest names in the transfer market.

No. 12 - David De Gea (Manchester United)

2015-16 Premier League season: 34 appearances, 15 clean sheets

Where would Manchester United have finished this past season without the dexterous David De Gea? It's a frightening thought. Goalkeeper numbers are difficult to decipher, but it's the general consensus that the Spaniard was the Red Devils' best player in 2015-16. He was named the club's player of the season for a third consecutive year, for what it's worth. And to think, he would have been in Madrid this season were it not for a clerical error.

No. 11 - Mousa Dembele (Tottenham)

2015-16 Premier League season: 29 appearances, 3 goals, 1 assist; 4.1 tackles, 3.3 successful dribbles, 2.2 interceptions per 90 minutes

Before he tried to rip Diego Costa's eyes from their sockets, Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele was enjoying a monstrous campaign in the centre of the park for Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs. The rock around which the gaffer's ultra-intense, high-pressing system was built, Dembele could both break up opposing attacks and at once shift Tottenham into high gear going forward. Gliding across the pitch effortlessly, the Belgian's tackle tally listed above was good enough for fifth in the league among players who made at least 25 appearances.
