Golden Boot chase: Kane, Vardy Aguero vie for crown on final day
Ahead of Sunday's final day of the 2015-16 Premier League season, three players are still in the running for the Golden Boot trophy awarded to the top flight's leading scorer.
Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and Tottenham's Harry Kane all have a shot at the honour, with the Argentine looking to become the first player to win the award two years on the trot since Robin van Persie.
Where they stand
Player | Goals | Games | Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Harry Kane | 25 | 37 | 0.67 |
Jamie Vardy | 24 | 35 | 0.68 |
Sergio Aguero | 24 | 29 | 0.83 |
Based solely on goals per match, the advantage goes to the diminutive City striker Aguero, though there are other variables at play.
Who they face
Will all three strikers away from home on Sunday - and facing varying motivations - the opponents could have more of a bearing than each player's form.
Tottenham @ Newcastle
With two influential midfielders (Dele Alli, Mousa Dembele) set to miss out because of suspension and its once-viable title ambitions now squashed, Tottenham will be motivated by the fear of a loss coupled with an Arsenal win against Aston Villa. Should Spurs lose and Arsenal win, the Gunners will finish ahead of Tottenham for the millionth consecutive year.
If that's not motivation enough to start Kane against the Magpies porous back line, then Mauricio Pochettino needs to have his head checked.
Leicester City @ Chelsea
The Foxes have nothing to play for besides the pride associated with gaffer Claudio Ranieri receiving the Guard of Honour at a club that sacked him in 2004.
While Chelsea have next to nothing to play for as well, Vardy will likely start solely in an attempt to pass Kane for the Golden Boot.
Manchester City @ Swansea City
With the three relegation spots sorted, and Leicester City two sheets to the wind planning the parade, City's trip to south Wales has more bearing than any other match on Sunday.
City players will be desperate to snatch the three points and nab a coveted Champions League spot over rival Manchester United, meaning Aguero will be relied upon for the bulk of the club's goal-scoring attempts.
